Cleft Care

This was the first project that required me to make a logo. The premise of the project was to take an existing company or organization that you had a personal connection with and redesign their logo. However, the new logo had to have an animal as a part of it. I chose the organization Operation Smile.

Operation Smile is a nonprofit organization that specializes in giving free medical operations to people living in third world countries who were born with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate. This medical condition is very serious as it not only imposes a physical threat to your health, but also an emotional one as well. The thought of children not being able to, or simply being afraid to for fear of being shunned, smile always hit me deep in my core.

Initially I planned for my logo to revolve around a dolphin, because of their friendly and protective qualities. However, after further exploring, I landed on the butterfly. In the end, I went with the butterfly because the whole idea behind Operation Smile revolved around metamorphosis. The act of changing from an ugly caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly directly relates to the mission of the organization. I did end up renaming the organization to Cleft Care, however. Operation Smile was deemed too broad and unspecific, so to really hone in the goal of the organization it was renamed to Cleft Care.
